Donation to Local Food Banks
The holiday season is upon us once again. For many of us, the holiday season brings a sense of gratitude for the things that we have, along with the awareness that there are many in our community who are struggling to make ends meet. We, at Rapid-Span, recognize the challenges that many communities have gone through in the past year. In lieu of sending our customers cards or gifts this holiday season, we have chosen to donate to our local food banks. The local food banks are in great need in our area this year as demands have increased significantly. Families that have never previously visited a food bank are finding that they need some extra help through these economically challenging times. We hope you support our decision to assist our local communities and wish you all the best in the New Year. Thank you for your continued support.

New Pitt River Bridge opens to traffic
The new Pitt River Bridge connecting Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows and the Tri Cities opened Sunday morning. Monday morning's commute should see less traffic congestion for the almost 90,000 vehicles that make the crossing each day. Rapid-Span provided some of the steel and precast components. The new bridge is a cable-stayed structure, which minimizes the number of piers in the river and their impact on the river ecology. The 16-metre clearance will allow boat traffic to travel underneath. The $198 million span has been in the works since 2006 and includes an interchange to replace traffic signals at the Mary Hill Bypass. It's the first completed project under the province's Gateway Program.

Pitt River Bridge and Mary Hill Interchange Project
Recently, Rapid-Span Precast was awarded the supply of the deck panels on the new Pitt River Bridge. The Pitt River Bridge and Mary Hill Interchange Project will replace the Lougheed Highway and Mary Hill Bypass Intersection. The new Pitt River Bridge will have six lanes with the capacity to add two more lanes in the future. The height of the new bridge will provide up to 16 metres of clearance over a 100 metre wide shipping channel in the Pitt River. The bridge design incorporates a dedicated bicycle and pedestrian pathway thus improving safety. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2009.

East Toba and Montrose Hydroelectric Projects
The East Toba and Montrose Creek Hydroelectric Projects are located on two sites upstream of the Toba River in Toba Inlet, north of Powell River. Once complete, the power projects will generate 196 megawatts of clean, renewable electricity that will meet the needs of 70,000 homes on average per year. Rapid-Span will be supplying 11 bridges on the 60km of access roads. The remoteness of this project has created some unique shipping scenarios with the materials having to be barged to a staging area. It is estimated that more than 130 barge trips will be made during the 3 year construction phase.
